Why was my Ruby Fortune Casino deposit declined?

Most refused deposits come from the bank or the card, not from the casino. Here is how to find which one said no and get your NZ$ into the cashier.

  • Bank gambling blocks
  • Cash-advance cards
  • E-wallet fixes
  • NZ$10 minimum

The direct answer

Why was my Ruby Fortune Casino deposit declined? Usually your bank said no, not the casino. New Zealand banks can block gambling merchant codes, treat credit card payments as cash advances, or stop an overseas charge as possible fraud. The rest are account-side: a deposit under NZ$10, a deposit limit you set earlier, or a card that is not in your name.

So first find out who refused the money. A bank error means a call to your bank; a limit or verification message means your account, and live chat can say which rule applied.

What to do next

Four checks, in the order I would run them.

  1. 1

Read the message: a bank or card error points to your bank; a limit, verification or amount message points to your casino account.

  2. 2

Check the basics: NZ$10 or more, the card is in your own name, online and overseas payments are switched on in your banking app, and you passed the 3-D Secure code step.

  3. 3

Ask your bank: ask whether a gambling block, a credit card rule or a fraud hold stopped the payment.

  4. 4

Switch method: Visa Debit, Skrill, Neteller or a bank transfer often works where a credit card fails. Then return to the Ruby Fortune cashier and try once more.

Why deposits get declined: the detail

Two gatekeepers can say no: your bank and the casino cashier.

When the bank refuses

Card networks tag online casinos with merchant category code 7995. Kiwibank and Westpac NZ let customers block that code on their cards, and ANZ has run a similar voluntary block for some time. Kiwibank's block covers every Visa Debit and credit card on your access number and takes up to two working days to add or remove; Westpac NZ's stays on for at least three months.

Credit cards bring a second trap. ANZ's own guide lists gambling chips among the cash substitutes that count as a cash advance, which usually means a fee and interest from day one. Fraud filters may also hold a first payment to an overseas merchant until you confirm it in your banking app.

When the cashier refuses

Amount under the minimum
The NZ offer lists a NZ$10 minimum. Enter NZ$10 or more, and check whether your chosen method shows a higher floor.
Deposit limit reached
A daily, weekly or monthly cap you set earlier blocks anything above it. See how the deposit limits work before you change one.
Card not in your name
Ruby Fortune verifies card ownership, so a partner's or parent's card will not pass. Use a method registered to you.
Verification pending
An open ID, address or source-of-funds request can pause banking. Upload the documents and ask chat to confirm.

What changed for Kiwi payments this year

Banking and the law both moved since late 2025.

  1. 1 Dec 2025

Open banking rules took effect; ANZ, ASB, BNZ and Westpac had to go live.

  2. 1 May 2026

The Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 came into force: up to 15 licences, run by the Department of Internal Affairs.

  3. June 2026

Kiwibank's deadline for open banking payments.

  4. 1 Dec 2026

Online casinos that have not applied for a licence must stop serving New Zealand. Applicants may keep operating, without advertising, while the DIA decides.

POLi is not on Ruby Fortune's NZ payment list. Banks long discouraged it because it logs into your internet banking for you, and its Australian arm closed in 2023, so guides still pointing Kiwis to POLi are out of date.

The Act also bans credit card and buy-now-pay-later payments at licensed operators, with the first licences expected from early 2027, so debit cards and e-wallets are the safer habit now. The official timeline is on the DIA online casino page.

What to do if it still did not work

If the basics check out and it still fails, ask the three places that can see what happened.

Declined Deposit FAQ

Quick answers after a refused payment.

Why was my Ruby Fortune Casino deposit declined when shops take my card?

Online casinos carry the gambling merchant code 7995. Bank gambling blocks, credit card rules and fraud filters react to that code, so a shop payment goes through while the casino one does not.

Is a credit card deposit at an online casino a cash advance in New Zealand?

Often, yes. ANZ, for one, counts gambling chips as a cash substitute, so the payment is a cash advance with a fee and interest from day one. Visa Debit avoids that.

What is the minimum deposit at Ruby Fortune Casino in New Zealand?

The NZ offer banner lists NZ$10, which also qualifies for the matched bonus and the daily Mega Millionaire Wheel spins. Some methods may show a higher floor in the cashier.

My card was declined but the money shows on my statement. Was I charged?

Usually not. A refused payment can leave a pending authorisation that drops off after a few days. If it settles and no balance appears, send the details to live chat and your bank.

Can Ruby Fortune lift my bank gambling block?

No. Only your bank can remove its block. Kiwibank says removal can take two working days; Westpac NZ blocks stay on for at least three months.

Will deposits stop working after 1 December 2026?

From that date only operators that have applied for a New Zealand licence may keep offering online casino gambling here. Check the licence page for the latest on Ruby Fortune.
